A Follow Up On The Tweeter Getter List Building Tool For Growing Your Twitter Followers List

15,625 New Twitter Followers in 30 Days?  What's This All About?

Join Mike Klingler in a discussion on Facebook (about Twitter for business) by clicking his picture.I wrote about a new Twitter list building tool called Tweeter Getter last week, and I suggested to proceed with caution... Well, here is an updated 'perspective' (after increasing my Twitter list size significantly within just a few days) --I've lightened up quite a bit on my opinion of Tweeter Getter and actually am taking this tool quite seriously as a unique opportunity for people to build a following (and quality relationships based on value and dialogue)--I'll explain.

First though, I have to say... if you're not using Twitter to build relationships for your business, you certainly should be. It's the simplest and most effective networking tool I've seen and used for business.

Now there's a new tool that's using viral marketing to build your Twitter following... it's called "Tweeter Getter" -- Before you use it there are some things to think about.

I started using Tweeter Getter the other day, and sure enough, it has already started building my Twitter list by about a thousand more followers so far (I have 8000+ followers in total--the other 7000 I built the 'old fashion' way and I'll continue to do so).

I've also been watching the followers list grow for others who started promoting Tweeter Getter, so I'm convinced it is indeed working (if you promote it properly and respectfully).

Because of the fast results and some great conversations with new followers who came to me from Tweeter Getter, I'm liking what I see so far.  That's why today I've started a quick Google campaign for it, and a Face book Ad campaign (and added some credits to my Traffic Exchange ads to promote it).  I think this is a unique opportunity that a lot of social marketing "purists" are going to miss out on.

I do understand their concerns... I just don't think those concerns apply to Tweeter Getter if it is marketed correctly (it's not like spammy tools we have seen used at YouTube or Facebook to build a list)... Tweeter Getter can be used respectfully of others, which I'll explain.

But I Do Still Believe You Need to Use Some Caution... If you're going to use this to build your followers list, it needs to be done 'mindfully'...

Tweeter Getter is, by nature, going to be controversial tool in the Twitter community--most people (non marketers in particular) don't 'get' the benefit of growing a Twitter following unless you have personally connected in some way. I 'see' why they may have this perspective--I've expressed the same opinion about using other 'spammy' methods for building 'friends lists' in social sites. But I see this quite differently.

This doesn't have to be done in a spammy way at all. And you can build relationships and provide value to those who follow you from Tweeter Getter just as you can from those who follow you by finding you any other way. So I do not see the Tweeter Getter tool as an annoyance if it is shared properly.

Initially, I hesitated to share Tweeter Getter because of some concerns I outline below... but after studying the debate I decided to let our community (at Marketing Merge) know about it. It started as half social experiment and the other half exciting and interesting. Now I'm glad I did because I am realizing that the list of followers that are joining from it are my target audience (business or marketing minded)--I've even started developing some great discussions and relationships revolving around the services I offer so these Twitter followers are as good as they come. As long as you're conversing and providing value, using Tweeter Getter will build your business.

Here's Basically What I Told Our MM Community -- If You Share This Tool With Your List You Should Do So With Some of These Things In Mind...

The controversy: Promoting anything constantly (and with no regard for other's perceptions) on Twitter will be considered by many people to be quite annoying. That is understandable. If you go to search.twitter.com and type in tweetergetter you will be able to read from all the people who hate it for just this reason... it encourages some people who are not thoughtful to spam (just blasting out about it over and over again at Twitter, which you SHOULD NOT do).

And some just don't like viral tools in general... for the same reason they don't like MLM or network marketing.

In addition, many 'marketers' do not believe in short cuts to building a list or following. They teach to build relationships (and I agree).

Taking Short Cuts... I don't typically suggest people try to take short cuts because usually that distracts them from building relationships and providing value... however, this particular tool simply ads more people onto your followers list so if you're engaging people in discussions and using Twitter to connect with people as it was designed, this tool (Tweeter Getter) will only help you do more of what you should be doing, attracting relationships and customers to your business and products.

If you decide to use this tool on Twitter, share it with some value added, such as I've done here. Refer to a blog post or video you create about it... Share your thoughts and other people's opinion of it--express your opinion. Don't just promote it without letting people know about the controversy of it. Be transparent.

Now, you can promote it however you like without so much discussion at places where that is acceptable (which is what I'm doing)... I suggest using traffic exchanges like Traffic Swarm since it is the kind of place viral marketing tools like this are accepted and even liked.

But remember, as people join your list through TweeterGetter or any other means, it is worthless to you unless you learn to provide value (discussions, and assisting people with their needs).  As long as you do that, you'll build quality relationships and generate business with Twitter regardless of where the 'followers' on your list came from (assuming they are in your target market).  Note that those who join through TweeterGetter are most likely business or marketing minded as an audience.  If that fits your business' target market it is a good fit.  If not, it's not going to be helpful for you to promote TweeterGetter.

Partners in success,

Mike Klingler

Click to See Tweeter Getter Tool

Note: It won't do much for you unless you promote it.  If you plan to, I first suggest contacting your list or posting about it at your blog, but only if done so mindfully with value added as I have here.  Remember, value can simply mean "sharing your perspective."  If you don't want to take the time to do that, and you still want to try building your Twitter followers list with it, use something like Traffic Swarm where they like viral tools.  Or, buy paid advertising on web sites or through PPC or Facebook ads, etc.

Sorry to be dense Mike but I don't really understand what you are talking about here. Probably because I'm new to twitter and I don't really understand how it works yet either. I would love a really good explanation if I could get one somewhere and then maybe the "tweeter getter" would make sense to me. Thanks and I do appreciate they way you share with all of us newbies.

OK Deb, I'll do my best :-)

To help me know where to begin, let me know if you:

1. Read the Tweeter Getter page that some of the links above go to
2. If you didn't understand THAT Tweeter Getter builds your followers list on Twitter, or
3. If you didn't understand HOW Tweeter Getter builds your followers list on Twitter, or
4. Why someone would even benefit by building their followers list on Twitter, or

Let me know which one(s) above I should address. Also let me know if you have Twitter (that would help too).

This is always easy if we go one step at a time.

Hi Mike, thanks for posting a comment on my <A HREF="http://shesales.com/sales-training-blog/why-tweetergetter-struck-a-chord">blog</A> about Tweeter Getter. I just wanted to come by yours and comment back about what you said: "If we really cared 'why' they added themselves to our list a lot more people would elect to manually view and accept all followers."

I don' t know how many people DON'T manually view & return the follow, but I for one DO. That's how much I believe in doing it organically.

I know it takes time, but if I don't have time to invest in relationship-building through a powerful social medium like Twitter, than I really don't have any business being there.

But that's just me.

Thanks for this post Mike. I had my Twitter account hacked a couple of months ago, and I am skeptical when it come to Twitter applications. I trust you on this because you always give great advice. Thanks for the value that you add to the internet marketing world!

February 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJason Blair, MBA

@ Ricci, I can understand that. With many social sites I also advocate a similar approach. With Twitter I have so many people following me I just don't have time to review them all and since I've had so much success developing relationships AFTER people add themselves to my list, I am enjoying using it that way.

@ Jason, yes, whenever you give your password, which we have to do with such Twitter apps, it is a concern. I've been communicating with the guy that created Tweeter Getter and he 'seems' transparent--but it is always a risk. I think we can just change our password at Twitter after signing up for Tweeter Getter to address that.

Glad you brought that up.

Most miss and no one talks about the fact that building a list of followers or friends is much like building a list of subscribers. There comes a point where you must weed out the tire kickers from the buyers, find the real followers and friends from the number seekers and pitchers. Perhaps creating two or more lists as we do in marketing and then feeding that niche with the content that fits.

Hi Mike I am now on tweetergetter cause you said to Should I buy the book? when are you doing interviews for your 30 people? and Are you doing your call Tues? I have been on the 1st 2 Bev Ferraro

Hi Mike, I wrote you and told you that I am leary of these type of things and I think they seem to be false. Well what I found out is Tweeter Getter is a wonderful tool. People genuinely want to follow people and be followed for a variety of reasons, but the bottom line reason is EXPOSURE.

I applied Tweeter Getter early Sunday morning and thus far I have had over 30 new people following me. Thanks for your leadership on this.

February 16, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRhonda K Hicks

hi Mike, personally I've shied away from using this app on twitter like I have magpie too, I guess i'm waiting for twitter themselves to come up with some kind of rev share model...

...Maybe it's because I'm cautious as I've had problems doing similar kinds of thing on facebook and youtube - neither like it if you sign up too many people too quickly, it seems their is an unwritten rule/code of ethics that this is some form of spamming, just like some people see safelists as "legal spam" - my personal opinion on that is - no it's not - it's two way permission based and just like you can broadcast to a twitter list, so you can to a safelist or friends.

I treat my contacts like I treat everyone else I know in a group - I make them aware somehow that yes I am human, and yes I am speaking generically to more than one person etc.

Some people just copy and paste a sales letter and a bunch of banners - I've learnt to mentally blockout that kind of thing but some people get highly offended by it, so I don't do that myself. i guess some people use "the 3 ft rule" on forums and feel they have to expose their business to everyone they meet at every opportunity - I've seen that method taught in business forums - so when people do it on Ning and places they are really just following orders.

I'm wary of retweeting too - the # hash tag for groups on a subject sounds a lot more promising - I'm still learning :-)

Hi Mike,

Nice dialogue you have going here. You've really opened up an important conversation and whether your "social experiment" winds up being friend or foe, it's your demonstration of leadership around this topic that people should really be taking note of.

I admit, I was very skeptical at first, even after your first email, I was like "no way." Yet I found myself "signing" for Tweeter Getter although I haven't used it. So I've been keeping an eye on your numbers and indeed, they've grown, but it's like you have said, you have to promote it (and promote with caution). It helps to have the marketing reach that you have.

Congrats on being in the top 500 for numbers of followers at Twitter. This means that I can hold you in the same esteem as Britney Spears, Ashton Kutcher and MC Hammer.

Thanks for monitoring this.

Well, personally I like it. I am new to twetter. Now I don't know if all those people would be following me anyway or if it is the tweeter getter. Since Friday I have 200 new followers.

Anyway, it is all experimental. Some work and some don't. just like research in a science lab.

I am having fun corrosponding with those that want to here from me, So I will not complain unless the hammer hits. Hopefully it want. I trust Mike on everything. I do not think he would lead us down a wrong path intentionally, he is too darn good.

I will say on a different note, news worthy, facebook just, (Feb 4), changed thier policy. All picutres and content on their site become their property. Now that means for advertisement and whatever. It may have always been that way. But I directed my tweets to Facebook. What does that mean ,I don't know.. Is it their property now? Should I change that? What do you say Mike?

February 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPatty Jones

Mike, What's with these tweet tools asking for your twiitter password? Is that a safe thing to do?

February 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBob Young

Hey Mike. I have just signed up for Twitter Getter, little confused. Have not been able to get the download! Yes, we must respect other people who are on the site also as we wish to have respect. Spamming and slamming people is not good, making them aware of different things is great. Giving our password out is not cool. Concerned about my credit card info as well, but did give to get my download. Keep us posted on the happenings and apprecaite your time, have not used info as yet, but will see what happens.

February 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEarlene

Hi Mike,

This is definitely an interesting social experiment. I have gone back and forth about whether I should promote this tool, and have come to the conclusion that if I make people aware of it who might benefit from it, in a way that is transparent and doesn't make any hyped-up promises, that should be ok.

Of course, I'll have to follow your good advice on the best ways to USE Twitter, by offering value in my tweets. With tools like TweeterGetter it is now easy to get followers, but it is still up to me to KEEP them.

thanks for the info. I guess I'm still not completely clear on how to use it. I'd like to understand a little more about it. I'm also leery of the password thing.

I'm interested to see where this goes.

Mike I've sort been waiting in the wings on this one,but I see now from all indications that your hunch might have been correct.Looks like I'll have to test the waters, twitter is a great tool and if twittergetter helps in the process of building an audience the more the better.Any other hunches in the crystal ball! I'll act much quickly next time.

February 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKevin thomas

Hi Kevin and everyone,

I'd just like to say that a lot of the big marketing leaders out there (and others who follow them) will be negative about Tweeter Getter. People like to take a stance so they can attract an audience. You can't attract an audience by being wishy washy. My stance on this was clear as well at first... "move forward if you are a risk taker but with these things in mind."

It's important to realize that if you decide to share in my 'stance' after looking at all the arguments than you'll meet some resistance here and there. That's the reality of the real world--you hang out in groups (just like in H.S.) whether we like that or not. It's human nature. I don't typically box myself into 'groups' or 'camps' too much but it is unavoidable that you'll attract like minded people.

Keep all this in mind. You can't align with everyone out there. In regard to Tweeter Getter, if you do it you want to be cautious that some will frown on it... the big players particularly because they will have more fear of harming their reputation.

I like the tool if used properly. It's more exposure and it's our target audience. I think the tool isn't helpful if you don't want business or marketing minded people on your follower's list.

February 19, 2009 | Registered CommenterMike Klingler

Nice balanced article. When you say big marketing leaders will be negative towards TweeterGetter, what kind of marketing leaders do you mean?

Just some of the names of people who liked and have used the system include:

Mark Joyner
Gary Ambrose
Russell Brunson
Harris Fellman
etc.

I've actually largely stayed out of the debate about TweeterGetter, even amid some very strong accusations towards me, password harvester, mlm spammer and more, not least from @MikeFitzAU

I thought I'd let results and experience do the talking. Let those who get it and use it benefit. And let those who oddly vehemently oppose it please themselves. ( @MikeFitzAU )

Gary.

February 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGary McCaffrey

Hi Gary, thanks for stopping in. I should have clarified that not ALL big marketing leaders are against getting more exposure through viral marketing! As I'm encouraging people use it I am certainly seeing the benefits of it.

I was more referring to some that are more known in our particular 'niche' like Mike Dillard I've noticed seems to oppose it, and I believe I saw Perry Belcher wasn't for the idea. The point I tried to make is that some of these guys just choose to take that perspective as a choice to align with a certain peer group. It doesn't mean their perspective is right for me, or anyone else.

After looking at all the arguments both ways, if used correctly I think it's a great tool for exposure. Once someone is on your following list it is then up to you (you meaning the person using Tweeter Getter) to connect, and provide value.

Gary, who created Tweeter Getter is a perfect example --note he's in here connecting, sharing his views. That's what you want to do.

Thanks again Gary!
Mike

Great post and great discussion. Thanks, Mike. A lot of people confused about the password thing... myself included. Why is the password needed, and if you then go and change your password, does TweeterGetter still work? Maybe I should address that question to Gary.
Nice blog.

Hi Mike
I am new to tweeter in fact a couple hours old. Your information is interesting to say the least. I have a few different sites that I own or promote and am new to all of this. The people that know me or are involved with my different sites say I am brutally honest with my comments. It is refreshing to also see some one with the same attitude and not be afraid to speak up. Great site and info.

Mike,

Followed you over here from your comment on my forum post regarding tweeter getter. I assume you found that post at Google where it ranked #1 for the first week or so after tweeter getter hit the scene.

Plus I just received an email from Ann stating you where working on a project with her so I decided to cruise your site a bit more.

I'd just like to say I really like your perspective on this tool. I presented it at the SBI forums too, and Ken Evoy wasn't taken to it much, but I think he didn't see it useful for many niche webmasters who's websites didn't relate to marketing.
(I've actually thought of linking to your article on the forum thread I started.)

At any rate your point of not spamming twitter over and over again with your tweeter getter url is probably the most important statement you made, among your other great points.

Sharing your tweeter getter url with those in your niche or marketers in general in numerous other settings is the key to making the tool effective IMO.

Just as an example here are some of the places I have promoted my tweeter getter url.

I started several groups called Tweeter Getters to promote the tool in general and my url in particular.

One is top 5 at squidoo of all groups. BTW I did get permission from Gary before using the images. You can see The Tweeter Getters Group here.

Some other places I've started groups for it are: StartupSpace and Sta.rtup.biz

Granted the last two are a bit of a jungle of aggressive marketers, but they are full of marketers none the less.

Just one final point and forgive me if you covered this but I don't remember much emphasis if you did. I think it is extremely important for those using this tool to follow back those who are following you. This really goes without saying, but I have noticed a few twits who have tons of followers and don't follow hardly any themselves.

I do understand some who are extremely popular not having their message board inundated with thousands of tweets, but for most of us it is not only common protocol but a good way to connect personally and usually by a direct thank you message you can respond to and introduce yourself with.

Thanks again for the great article Mike, I look forward to your tweets as I'm sure they will not only be valuable in content, but provide insight for concise copywritting skills as well.

Best wishes,
Zac

Tweetergetter can be a decent tool to get hundreds of followers, if you promote it AND the people you promote it to, also promote it. Kind of like in most mlm a certain percentage will go out and really do it. I've found there are a few very nice tools out there that will explode your followers, but more importantly followers interested in your niche (which is the drawback of Tweetergetter)

Mike,

Great article. Followed you over from Traffic Swarm and saw your other promo link, too. I'll have to agree with you about posting on a blog to give "value added" content to your followers.

I usually don't have much time during the day to be "tweeting" everything that comes in because so many are -- as you say -- inocuous (my words). I've been using SocialOomph.com to automate a lot of my following and rotating my tweets and retweets. SocialOomph was TweetLater until they recently changed over.

SocialOomph has made life a little bit easier, and I can even set up scheduled tweets for my followers at later dates and times; but all in all, I want to be able to provide my followers with solid content as you do.

Which is why I finally set up my blog over at the Guerrilla Internet Marketing site. Not a whole lot of self-serving promotion going on, but a lot of sold content about marketing and advertising. I hope it proves beneficial as your site does.

I'll be looking forward to hearing from you soon. I'll set up a tweet to follow you.

Thanks for the article. Good content.

Who is Gary McCaffrey and why should we trust a word he says? I for one have never heard of him. The links for Tweeter Getter go through to an email gathering page for a guy wearing sunglasses - not the best way to communicate trust- and there's no guarantee with his product even though it's very affordable.

Not very impressed. I would have been much more impressed had this been made clear in Mike's post. Are we just building Gary's email list so he can make more offers to us over time? Surely not the point of this whole exercise?
