Setting It Up So Your Twitter Account Isn't Bombarded With Automated Direct Messages (Auto DMs)

Right now I have about 7000 DM in my box.  That's because people have set up automatic DMs so a direct message is sent out to everyone who follows them.  Over the course of a few days, I follow quite a few people on Twitter because I'm very active there, and I don't mind receiving DMs (direct messages) from people.  But when people set up the auto DM I end up getting my box so full I can't manage them all... and they are usuall sales pitches.  I haven't had time to delete all the DM's I've gotten so they just pile up.

So if you're like me and you'd prefer to not get so many DMs, and you'd like the messages you do get to be personally written, here's how you can remove yourself from the auto DMs.

2 Places to go to remove yourself from auto DMs:

  • Follow @optmeout by going to http://twitter.com/optmeout
  • After you are followed back (takes minutes) send a direct message to @optmeout (it can say anything)
  • You can unfollow @optmeout if you like after you do this

At this point, people who use TweetLater to send auto DMs will not be sending any to you from that point forward!  Now you have a much more managable DM inbox!

There is one more common place people set up auto DMs you should opt out of.  It's called SocialToo

  • Go to http://socialtoo.com
  • Click on “Create Account to Auto Follow & More”
  • Set up  an account
  • After you’ve set up an account & logged in, click “Preferences” tab at upper right side of page
  • Indicate where it says “NEW! Turn off automatic Direct Messages from SocialToo and other services?”
  • Scroll to bottom & hit Submit

You're done!
